Individual therapy is offered at the Village Counseling Centre for a wide variety of issues. Most commonly individuals seek help in dealing with depression, anxiety, divorce, abuse (both current and past), a troubled relationship, parenting difficulties, and many other areas of concern.

Individual sessions are 50 minutes in length and will focus on the issue and the pathway to change and healing. Sessions are usually scheduled weekly at the inception of therapy and may be spaced out as therapy progresses. Many individuals reserve and look forward to a regular weekly appointment time.

    Couples Counseling

Maintaining a good working marital relationship can be a difficult task. Relationships that once were very close and loving can grow distant, become cold and even adversarial. A variety of factors contribute to the decline in marital satisfaction that many couples experience.

Every therapist on the staff of Village Counseling Centre is married. In addition they all have the training and experience necessary to successfully work with couples. Couples’ Therapy at Village Counseling Centre is conducted by every therapist on our staff. Therapy consists of weekly 50 minute sessions, usually with both parties present. At times, sessions may be scheduled with each party separately. Couples are encouraged to set specific goals for their relationship and/or for themselves individually.

    Marital Counseling

A significant percentage of the marriages in the United States will be faced with infidelity in the marital relationship. Once an affair has taken place, positive intervention can help couples to understand why it happened and begin the work of restoring the relationship and rebuilding trust and personal intimacy.

Marital restoration following an affair is a process that involves establishing a relationship with your therapist, facing and discussing the betrayal, resolving unanswered questions and progressing to the point where the focus can shift from betrayal to the marital relationship. Couples who successfully navigate the process of restoring their relationship find their marriage develops a closer, much stronger, and more fulfilling relationship than they have ever experienced.

Infidelity creates many emotional challenges for the individual who remained faithful. At times an affair will end with the unfaithful person leaving the relationship for the “other” person. This can result in tremendous hurt for the one who was left behind. Our therapists have helped many individuals through this painful territory and to successfully rebuild their lives with purpose, healing, dignity and hope.

    Family Counseling

The counseling staff at Village Counseling Centre has had extensive experience in working with families and providing family therapy for various family needs. At times, therapy for couples or individuals is enhanced and progress is made with one or more family sessions. Many situations involving children, adolescents, step-families, foster care and adoption are improved with the involvement of the entire family for portions of the therapy.

    Teen Counseling

It is a distressing and frightening experience for parents when they have a troubled teen. Parents want their children to be on track for a successful and fulfilling life, and it is painful when a parent feels helpless in guiding a child back to a better path. Teens are sometimes resistant to the idea of entering into therapy. More than once our therapists have been informed by a parent on the first visit that their teen said they would come to the counseling office but that they would not say a word to the therapist. We tell parents to just get their teen into the waiting room and we will take it from there. Parents are relieved to learn that their teen is open to change and is responsive to confidential discussion with a therapist.

Your teen will begin working with a knowledgeable and experienced therapist who will spend the bulk of the initial session with the parent or parents. Teen sessions are 50 minutes in length and will focus on the issues and concerns presented by the parent and teen. Sessions are usually scheduled weekly at the inception of therapy and sometimes will be spaced out as therapy progresses. Many teens begin to look forward to their regular weekly appointment time.

    Child Counseling

Parents often seek counseling for a child experiencing difficulty adjusting to some of the transitions of life, behavioral problems, school problems, self esteem issues, the effects of sexual, physical or verbal abuse and other concerns. It is the practice of the counseling staff to meet with a parent first before conducting a session with a child.

Our staff of experienced therapists relates well to children and quickly helps them feel at home. Child sessions are 50 minutes in length and will focus on the issues and concerns presented by the parent.

    Pre-Marital Counseling

Marriage is a commitment to a long-term relationship. While a license is required for marriage, there is little or no training involved. It is expected that people will naturally know how to make it work, and unfortunately, about half of the time it does not. By investing a few hours in training, preparation and gaining a deeper understanding of a potential spouse, couples are better equipped to face the problems that can and do occur in a marriage.

The premarital counseling program at the Village Counseling Centre involves a series of 4 to 5 sessions designed to teach:

    • Communication - How To Keep It Going.
    • Intimacy - Keeping Love Alive.
    • Healthy Families - What Are They?
    • Expectations - What Do You Want?
    • Personality – How to work with the differences.
    • Romance – What helps to keep it alive?

The introduction of children into marriage is both a source of pleasure and a source of stress. In a first marriage a couple often brings differing perspectives about the process of child rearing, including discipline, involvement in taking care of the physical needs of children and how to maintain a strong marital relationship in the midst of the numerous demands a child places on parents. In blended families there are many issues related to the presence of stepchildren in the home. These issues along with a number of other topics and concerns often come to the surface and will be addressed in pre-marital counseling sessions.

By learning some basic skills in working through the unique issues each couple faces, the outcome is more secure. Each couple will be introduced to resources and materials that will be useful in the future as they grow together.
